The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture was established in April 2006. Major programs are offered in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering, Road and Bridge Construction, and Construction Energy Conservation), Project Management, and Architecture.
Five Level-A research institutes are affiliated with the School: the Institute of Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Institute of Industrial Design and Product Innovation, and the Institute of Art Design. There are also three class-B research centers: the Ninbo Yinzhou Industrial Design R&D Center, the Pollution Control and Resource Engineering Center, and the Green Building Material and Waste Resourcing Research Center. Other research facilities include the NIT Architectural Design and Research Institute , the Civil Engineering Testing Center, and the Intelligent Building Testing Center.
There are currently 1725 undergraduate students, 49 graduate students, and 2 post-doctoral students. Most of the 327 graduates of the school’s Class of 2010 are now fully employed.
The Civil Engineering major is a 4-year academic program. With the aim to support the continuing boom in civil and construction engineering projects in the Ningbo area, this major focuses on structural engineering and on road and bridge engineering. The program teaches basic engineering principles of design, measurement, construction, and quality assurance, and how to apply this knowledge to real-world projects. Students also receive training in areas of economics, business administration, and management relevant to their field of study.
The major of Engineering Management is a 4-year academic program that enables students to focus on the business and management aspects of the field of civil engineering while also acquiring full working knowledge of civil engineering principles, methods, and technology. Students learn about the regulations that govern and control the quality of civil engineering projects. In short, the Engineering Management major seeks to develop competent civil engineers with managerial talent who have a responsible and innovative awareness of the entire engineering project environment and process.
The Architecture major is a 5-year academic program established to support the rapidly expanding development of China’s construction industry. The curriculum teaching basic principles and technology of architectural engineering and cultivates students’ talents in the areas of structural and interior design, as well as urban planning. Program graduates can confidently fill posts as architects in architectural design firms, city planning institutes, and government departments.
The 4-year Art Design major specializes in the fields of environmental design and digital media. The curriculum develops a sound conceptual background aimed at practical application of design principles to engineering-related applications and combines a thorough knowledge of planning and management skills with a spirit of creativity and innovation. Graduates may choose to enter a wide range of fields, including interior design, outdoor environmental design, urban landscape design, exhibition design, two- and three-dimensional animation design and production, game design and production, as well as multi-media advertising design and production.
The 4-year major program in Industrial Design combines a solid foundation in the principles of industrial design with a working knowledge of industrial automation, digital technology, user psychology, and sociology. Creativity, innovation, and broad perspective are encouraged in order to develop students’ design skills to their highest potential.
After graduation, students can look forward to challenging positions in fields that require competent product and communication designers. In 2007, our school’s Industrial Design major was ranked among the ‘2nd batch key’ majors in Ningbo.
The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture has a well-structured faculty of 69 persons. There is one “Sanjiang Scholars” distinguished professor, 5 professors, 15 associate professors, and 29 lecturers. Currently, there are 13 PhDs, 25 with master’s degrees, and 4 doctoral candidates.
Professor Li Longyuan from the University of Birmingham, UK, participates in our school as its first “Sanjiang Scholar”. Other outstanding members of our faculty include engineering academician Chen Zuyu, honorary professors Zheng Yingren and Sun Jun, and visiting professor Liu Xila from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Faculty awards include one second-grade and one third-grade entry in the Zhejiang Provincial 151 Talent Project, and one second-grade entry in the Ninbo “4321” Talent Project.
The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture boasts a full complement of modern facilities and aids for teaching and learning. With a total investment to date of about 183,000 RMB, our reading room has a collection of 3716 books and carries 60 field-specific Chinese and foreign periodicals. The Civil Engineering Lab consists of 10 sub-labs: Civil Engineering Materials Lab, Engineering Measurement Lab, Rock and Road Lab, Structure and Bridge Lab which includes labs for structural analysis and project management, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Building Visual Arts Lab, Building Physics and Energy Conservation Lab, Model Lab, Art Design Lab, and Digital Media Lab. With a total of about 6,000 square meters of lab space and an investment in equipment of nearly 11 million RMB, the successful implementation of teaching and research work in our major programs is ensured.
Our school has established a number of successful platforms for scientific research, including the International Cooperation Base and the main laboratory of the Urban and Rural Water Pollution Control for Ningbo city.
Several national academic conferences have been hosted by our school, such as one on structural design security and another on sustainable development. Since 2009, we have received funds on two occasions from the National Natural Science Foundation twice, for one project in the National Spark Program, for one project in the Science and Technology Department sponsored by the International Cooperation Program, and from the Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation on two occasions, for a funding total of over 17 million RMB. We have published more than 100 research articles, including 3 in SCI, 33 in EI, 6 in ISTP, and 1 in AHCI.
International Exchange Programs
In accordance with an accreditation scheme arranged between our school and Queen’s School University, UK, four Civil Engineering majors who enrolled in 2007 went in 2010 to study at this foreign university. We are currently working to set up similar cooperative programs in Architecture and other disciplines to provide our students with a pathway to further their studies in the United Kingdom. In developing these and other international exchange programs, our school demonstrates its determination to improve the quality of education as well as to provide an open, international learning environment.
The School of Civil Engineering and Architecture understands the importance of a positive academic atmosphere and an active campus culture that promotes the development of well-rounded individuals. To achieve this, we encourage the formation of student associations, encourage competitions between students of different disciplines, and support joint research projects. We also sponsor special activities and festivals, such as the popular DMB Hand-on-Hand Climbing Festival, with excellent results. In 2010, our school won the first prize in “One School, One Product” competition with the “DMB Hand-on-Hand Climbing Festival” activity.
Thirteen special design projects have been funded by Green City, a college student research fund. The result has been an impressive series of awards: Three second prizes and one third prize in the 10th Structural Design Contest held by Zhejiang University, the grand prize and first prize in the provincial 9th Zhejiang Structural Design Contest, first prize in the national Structural Design Contest, second prize in the provincial 9th Multimedia Application Contest,, and three third prizes in the provincial 4th Architectural Design Contest. Other awards include a gold medal in the provincial 2nd Industrial Design Contest, a silver medal, and five bronze medals.
